Hurling Roundup 09/08/2008 Well done to Slashers hurler Ronan Sheehan who represented Stonepark N.S. in the I.N.T.O. Mini Sevens in Croke Park on Sunday at the Kilkenny V Cork All-Ireland semi-final. He flew the flag for Longford hurling with distinction! Last Wednesday evening our Under-12's played their first home game in the Westmeath league in 2 years of participating in this competition & defeated Southern Gaels/Fr. Daltons on a scoreline of 4-2 to 1-3. At half-time we were a goal down but, despite being short a couple of key players, our boys put in an almighty "team" effort in the 2nd half & turned the tide impressively. Gary Burke had another fine game in goals, Daniel Doherty excelled at full back & Conal Murphy (making his welcome return) & Robbie Clarke gave glittering performanes on the wings. Reuben Murray & Ronan Sheehan worked tirelessly at midfield while in attack Mark Donlon & John Hand made telling contributions throughout & Conor Gallagher was the "man with the midas touch" poaching the 4 crucial goals. Also, Thomas Maguire, who plays for the Slashers footballers, made his debut for the hurlers & did very well. Our next fixture is next Wednesday August 20th against Clainn Lir & victory should ensure a place in the 'B' final which would be a fantastic achievement for a Longford club & hopefully a stepping-stone to even greater things to come. Our own county championship final is scheduled for the following Saturday (the 23rd) in Slashers, time yet to be confirmed. Training is this Wednesday (today) at 5pm & large attendance is vital.
Hurling Roundup 01/08/2008 Last Sunday week we held our annual church gate collection in order to raise much-needed funds for the running of the club. We'd like to express our gratitude to all those who contributed as well as thanking all members who helped with the collection.
This Wednesday (Aug. 6th) our Under-12's are again in action in the Westmeath league with a rare home game against Southern Gaels/Fr. Daltons, throw-in at 7pm. A win in this fixture would leave our boys well-placed to challenge for honours in this competition. All players should be in Slashers by 6.30.
Hurling Roundup 23/07/2008 Congratulations to our Under-11 team who became county champions after comprehensively beating Wolfe Tones at Devine Park, Edgeworthstown on Monday last week. There were big performances all over the pitch for the sky blues, especially from Reuben Murray (Capt.), Cian Kavanagh, Ronan Sheehan, Liam Duffy, Robbie Clarke, Mark Donlon & John Shea. Hard luck to a very young Tones team who battled bravely throughout. Beidh lá eile agaibh.
Almost all our team was in action again 2 days later in the Westmeath U-12 league when they travelled to play Delvin & won a hard-fought victory. Our defence stood tall in this encounter with Daniel Howlin & Daniel Doherty leading by example. Joe Bennett (capt.) got in for some crucial goals & John Hand caused major problems for the home team with his penetrating runs. Well done also to Gary Burke who had a fine game between the posts.
Training will most likely resume next Wednesday August 6th at 5pm.
Senior training continues every Wednesday at 8pm.
Hurling Roundup 18/05/2008 This week our Under-12's play two away matches in the Westmeath League; against Castlepollard this Monday May 19th (see next week's notes) & against Raharney on Wednesday May 21st. Bus departs from Slashers at 5pm Wednesday. Our younger players will get a chance to showcase their skills next Monday May 26th at a 5-a-side blitz at the astro-turf pitch in Edgeworthstown where we hope to have two teams competing. Training for seniors continues Mondays & Wednesdays at 8pm.
Hurling Roundup 27/04/2008 Congratulations to our Under-12's on capturing the league title for the second year in-a-row on Saturday. They defeated arch rivals Wolfe Tones in an enthralling contest in which it took a superb goal in injury-time from danger man Reuben Murray to break Edgeworthstown hearts. The final score was 2-4 to 2-3. Well done to all involved & commiserations to the gallant losers. This team was also in action lastWednesday in the Westmeath league & got the campaign off to a flying start with a big win over Brownstown. On bank holiday Monday at 3pm our U-14's take part in the Feile competition with a semi-final against the losers of Clonguish V Wolfe Tones with the final taking place afterwards at 4pm.
