Latest Hurling News

Well done to our Under-12's who qualified for the Division 2 final of the Westmeath league by topping their group after comprehensively beating Clainn Lir in Slashers last Wednesday. This was another tremendous team performance & there were leaders all over the field with Joe Bennett (capt.) having his best game of the season so far & Cian Kavanagh hurling supremely throughout, despite receiving a heavy knock in the first half. Matters now become more local for the boys as our own U-12 championship final versus Wolfe Tones takes place this Wednesday (August 27th) in Slashers at 6.30. All players should be present before 6.
Congratulations to our senior footballers who had a great win over Clonguish at the weekend to qualify for the county championship semi-final. Finally, the club would like to extend deepest sympathies to the family of Noel "Butch" Treacy on their recent bereavement. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Senior Fixtures

Senior Championship Quarter Final

Slashers V Abbeylara in Pearse Park on Sat 6 Sept at 6pm

Slashers take on Abbeylara in the senior championship semi final next Saturday 6 Sept.  This promises to be a cracker with the teams having played twice this year and with one victory each.  Slashers played Abbeylara in the first round of the championship and had a surprise runaway victory.  Abbeylara gained revenge in the Leader Cup when they picked Slashers apart leading 1-9 to 0-2 at half time. They took the foot off in the second half to allow Slashers to salvage some pride and to only lose by four points. Both teams lost in the Leader Cup at the weekend showing that their concentration is on the championship.  This should be a great game and supporters and friends are asked to turn out in big numbers to support the team.

Note

Both teams lost in the Leader Cup at the weekend showing how stupid it is to fix a Leader Cup game the weekend before a Championship match.  It demeans the Leader Cup.  Would the County board fix a senior league game the week before the County team plays in the Championship - I think not!

Leader Cup Division 1

Longford Slashers 0-7 Sean Connolly’s 1-8

Sean Connolly’s emerged deserving winners in this well contested game played under lights  in Michael Fay Park last Friday night.  Slashers fielded an experimental team, giving a number of fringe players a chance to stake their claim to a championship starting position.  A number of players were rested or tried in different positions and the team management will not have learned too much from this outing. It is difficult to focus on a league match with a championship semi final the next weekend (Abbeylara also suffered defeat to Ardagh).

Connolly’s played strong football, getting as many men behind the ball as possible and then breaking quickly.  This packed defence worked well as our forwards struggled to make an impact against the blanket defence.  At the end Slashers reduced the lead to 2 points and were putting pressure on the Connolly’s goals but they coped well and broke a number of times to register the game winning scores.

This was a very poor performance but will be quickly forgotten it we get the right result next weekend. Team: P. McKeon, C. Barnes, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, D. Brady, T. O’Rourke, B. Farrell, P. Brady, D. Sheridan, M. Smith, B. Gilleran, M. Tarmey, T. Glendenning, C. Smith, S. Phillips.  Subs: C. McGurran, S. Campbell.

Senior Championship Quarter Final

Longford Slashers 0-11 Clonguish 1-7

Our senior team are through to the semi final of the Championship thanks to a performance of real substance last Saturday night.  The game was played in extremely wet conditions and was littered with errors from both teams.  However, this did not take away from the excitement and a one point victory tells the story of how close a game this was.

Clonguish, backed by a noticeable breeze, set the early pace and goaled following a defensive error. They stretched the lead to 1-04 to 0-1 after 15 minutes and Slashers struggled to get the ball out of their half during this period.  Gradually Slashers got a foot hold in the game, and while we never looked like taking control we began to hold our own around the park.  At half time the score was 1-05 to 0-3.

On the resumption Clonguish scored the first point but this was to be there last until the second last minute of the game.  Slashers took control and aided by the breeze started to play more direct ball into the forwards.  This paid dividends and gradually we started to reduce the lead. Frees from Mark Smith and three excellent points from Adrian Murphy put us level.  Mark Smith scored two more to put us two ahead with only two minutes left.  Clonguish pegged us back to one and we held out for a great victory.

This was real championship football, played at great pace and in a great spirit. Both teams showed great commitment and either team could have won.

I must give credit (as I am quick to criticise) to referee, Stephen ‘Rocky’ Tierney, who had a tough task due to the conditions, and did a great job letting the play flow when possible.

This was a great victory and a great team performance. All over the field players stood up to be counted when the going got tough. This is what is required to win a championship.  It is important to use this performance as a benchmark and to improve on this performance next time out.  As the saying goes ‘nothing is won yet’.

Team: G. Hourican, C. Barnes, D. Glennon, G. Ghee, P. Brady, M. Brady, D. Brady, I. Shannon, D. Sheridan, M. Smith, B. Gilleran, A. Murphy, T. Glendenning, P. Dobson, S. Phillips.  Subs: D. Mannion for M. Brady (inj), C. Smith for P. Dobson.
