Leader Cup Division 1

Longford Slashers 0-7 Sean Connolly’s 1-8

Sean Connolly’s emerged deserving winners in this well contested game played under lights  in Michael Fay Park last Friday night.  Slashers fielded an experimental team, giving a number of fringe players a chance to stake their claim to a championship starting position.  A number of players were rested or tried in different positions and the team management will not have learned too much from this outing. It is difficult to focus on a league match with a championship semi final the next weekend (Abbeylara also suffered defeat to Ardagh).

Connolly’s played strong football, getting as many men behind the ball as possible and then breaking quickly.  This packed defence worked well as our forwards struggled to make an impact against the blanket defence.  At the end Slashers reduced the lead to 2 points and were putting pressure on the Connolly’s goals but they coped well and broke a number of times to register the game winning scores.

This was a very poor performance but will be quickly forgotten it we get the right result next weekend. Team: P. McKeon, C. Barnes, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, D. Brady, T. O’Rourke, B. Farrell, P. Brady, D. Sheridan, M. Smith, B. Gilleran, M. Tarmey, T. Glendenning, C. Smith, S. Phillips.  Subs: C. McGurran, S. Campbell.

Senior Championship Quarter Final

Longford Slashers 0-11 Clonguish 1-7

Our senior team are through to the semi final of the Championship thanks to a performance of real substance last Saturday night.  The game was played in extremely wet conditions and was littered with errors from both teams.  However, this did not take away from the excitement and a one point victory tells the story of how close a game this was.

Clonguish, backed by a noticeable breeze, set the early pace and goaled following a defensive error. They stretched the lead to 1-04 to 0-1 after 15 minutes and Slashers struggled to get the ball out of their half during this period.  Gradually Slashers got a foot hold in the game, and while we never looked like taking control we began to hold our own around the park.  At half time the score was 1-05 to 0-3.

On the resumption Clonguish scored the first point but this was to be there last until the second last minute of the game.  Slashers took control and aided by the breeze started to play more direct ball into the forwards.  This paid dividends and gradually we started to reduce the lead. Frees from Mark Smith and three excellent points from Adrian Murphy put us level.  Mark Smith scored two more to put us two ahead with only two minutes left.  Clonguish pegged us back to one and we held out for a great victory.

This was real championship football, played at great pace and in a great spirit. Both teams showed great commitment and either team could have won.

I must give credit (as I am quick to criticise) to referee, Stephen ‘Rocky’ Tierney, who had a tough task due to the conditions, and did a great job letting the play flow when possible.

This was a great victory and a great team performance. All over the field players stood up to be counted when the going got tough. This is what is required to win a championship.  It is important to use this performance as a benchmark and to improve on this performance next time out.  As the saying goes ‘nothing is won yet’.

Team: G. Hourican, C. Barnes, D. Glennon, G. Ghee, P. Brady, M. Brady, D. Brady, I. Shannon, D. Sheridan, M. Smith, B. Gilleran, A. Murphy, T. Glendenning, P. Dobson, S. Phillips.  Subs: D. Mannion for M. Brady (inj), C. Smith for P. Dobson.

Leader Cup – Division 1

Longford Slashers 1-12 St. Patrick’s, Ardagh 1-8

Our senior team recorded a deserved victory against a competitive Ardagh team on Tuesday night last.  The early exchanges were tough and space was at a premium with both teams guilty of giving away silly frees – the first four scores of the game were from frees. At this stage Slashers lead 0-3 to 0-1.  Slashers never relinquished the lead and were 1-6 to 0-4 up at half time.  The goal was hammered to the net by the impressive Adrian Murphy after a good passing movement.  Stephen Philips also had a great goal chance but was denied by an excellent save.  The second half followed the same pattern with Slashers dominating most of the play. Entering the last five minutes the score stood at 1-11 to 0-7 but Ardagh scored a cracking goal to reduce the margin to 4 points.  Further points were exchanged and Slashers held out comfortably at the end.

The defence played well and looked comfortable for most of the game, midfield coped well against county midfielder Liam Keenan and Shane Campbell competed extremely well for high balls.  Up front we looked very dangerous with Trevor, Barry and Phillip Dobson leading the way.

Team: P. McKeon, C. Barnes, D. Glennon, G. Ghee, P. Brady, T. O’Rourke, D. Brady, S. Campbell, D. Sheridan (0-1), M. Smith (0-6, 4f), B. Gilleran, A. Murphy (1-0), T. Glendenning (0-2), P. Dobson (0-2), S. Phillips (0-1).

2008 Intermediate Football Championship

Slashers 1-06 Kenagh 2-09

This game was played in wet and windy conditions in Newtown on Sunday last.  We had a mainly young team and they played excellent football for large parts of the game only to run out of steam near the end.  This game was close all through and it was only in those last few minutes that Kenagh pulled away.  A serious shoulder injury to Willie John McDermott, which necessitated a transfer to hospital, changed the course of the game.  We lost our focus and threat in attack and while we had a couple of goal chances near the end we never looked like winning the game.

Overall this was a great performance against a strong, experienced Kenagh team and the number of young players who excelled  bodes well for the future.

Best for Slashers were Ruairi Barnes, Leon Doherty, Chris McGurran and Tomas Kelly.

Team: E.P. Nolan, R. Barnes, R. Turner, P. McKeon, A. Lynch, L. Doherty, C. McGurran, A. Lyons, n. Morrissey, D. Sheahan, W.J. McDermott, T. Kelly, S. Dann, M. Nevin, J. McKeon.

Senior Championship Qualifier

Longford Slashers 1-18 Sean Connolly’s 0-4

We had a fantastic win in the Senior championship qualifiers against a disappointing Sean Connolly’s team.  We set the tone from the very beginning and never took our foot off the gas until the final whistle.  We lead 1-08 to no score at half time and continued to press in the second half.  Our forwards gave an exhibition in point taking and it is a long time since we have had a performance like this.  So what is the true potential of this team? This question will be answered another day.  You can only beat the team you are playing and we did this emphatically on Saturday evening.

The inclusion of Michael Brady and Trevor Glendenning up to full speed there was much more urgency in our play.  We performed much better in the midfield area and ensure supply to our dangerous forward line that made it count.

There are still many areas we need to improve on but this victory should give us the confidence that we can match any team on any given day.

Congrats to everyone involved and hopefully we can reproduce this form in the next round.

Team: G. Hourican, C. Barnes, D. Glennon, G. Ghee, P. Brady, M. Brady, D. Brady, I, Shannon, D, Sheridan, M. Smith, B. Gilleran, A. Murphy, T. Glendenning , P. Dobson, S. Phillips.

Senior Championship Round 2

Longford Slashers 1-07  Emmet Óg 2-06

We were defeated in round 2 of the Senior championship by two points. We can have no complaints as Killoe deserved to win and the margin could have been greater had they not been so wasteful in the first half.  That said we had a huge number of bad wides in the first half and still led by 1-04 to 0-1 at half time.

The second half was a disaster. We registered the first score but lost our way completely after this.  The two Killoe goals were flicks from towering full forward, Aidan Keogh. We played like a team who though we had enough done and when Killoe put the squeeze on we were unable to respond.  We only managed 2 further points in the game and on a perfect day for football this was never going to be enough.

It is difficult to say where we lost the game.  When Killoe upped the tempo in the second half very few of our players rose their level.  Our problems were not confined to one area but their seem to be a general malaise effecting the whole team.

Fortunately for the team we now enter the qualifiers.  This will give the team another chance to show their true form.  We are much better than the display on Sunday and hopefully the players will perform at the last chance saloon.

Team: G. Hourican, D. Mannion, T. O'Rourke, G. Ghee, P. Brady, D. Glennon, D. Brady, I, Shannon, D, Sheridan, T. Glendenning, B. Gilleran, A. Murphy, M. Smith, P. Dobson, S. Phillips.

Leader Cup - Round 5

Slashers 1-8 Clonguish 0-15

We suffered another Leader Cup defeat against Clonguish in Newtown on Sunday afternoon last.  The strong rain and persistent rain dictated that the game was never gong to be a classic.  Both teams found it difficult to adapt to the conditions.  Slashers played with the strong wind in the first half and failed to take advantage, leading by only one point at halftime.  Several aimless and inaccurate balls were kicked into our excellent full forward line, many of which carried out over the end line by the greasy surface and strong wind.

In the second half Clonguish had the advantage but we played much better and the game was in the balance up to the end.  During the second half the post denied substitute Eamon Nolan a goal and in another incident he should have been awarded a penalty after he was dragged down after a powerful run.

Best of Slashers were Dermot Brady, P. Dobson, B. Gilleran, E.P. Nolan and S. Phillips

Team: R. Duffy, D. Mannion, T. O’Rourke, G. Ghee, P. Brady, I. Shannon, D. Brady, M. Brady, D. Sheridan, B. Farrell, M. Tarmey, T. Glendenning, P. Dobson, B. Gilleran, S. Phillips. Subs used – C. Barnes, S. Campbell, and E.P. Nolan.

Leader Cup - Round 2

Slashers 0-17 Fr. Manning Gaels 0-7

We had another great win in the Leader cup on Sunday last against a strong Fr. Manning Gaels team.  This was a great turn around from the previous week where the same team defeated us in the Allen Cup.  The team picked up from the last round victory against Dromard and took control of the game from the very beginning and had a 0-6 points to 0-1 lead after 15 minutes.  This was extended to 0-12 to 0-2 by half time.

We seem to come off the gas a bit in the second half but the game was already won so it was difficult to keep up the same intensity.

The full back line was again in great form.  Ian Shannon had another big game at centre half back.  Midfield of Barry Gilleran and David Sheridan gave us the edge at midfield.  Up front the Smith brothers Colm and Mark were outstanding wand contributed most of the scores.  They were well supported by Stephen Phillips and Paul Kelly.

Two wins in two games is a terrific start to the year.  We face Ballymahon away next week and the result of this game will give us a clearer indication of exactly where we are.

Team: G. Hourican, P. Brady, T. O’Rourke, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, I. Shannon, D. Brady, D. Sheridan, B. Gilleran, B. Farrell, P. Kelly, M. Smith, P. Dobson. S. Phillips, C. Smith.  Subs used – M. Brady

Junior League - Division 3B

Slashers 4-15 Fr. Manning Gaels 0-8

We did the double against the Gaels with a comprehensive victory over Fr. Manning Gaels in the junior league.  The result was never in doubt as we dominated from start to finish.

Peter Brady had a stormer at full back until he had to retire injured.  Leon Doherty and Tomas Kelly were outstanding in the half back line. Midfield of Shane Campbell and Andrew Lyons dominated while up front David Sheahan, Willie John McDermott and Ollie Plunkett excelled.

Team: P. McKeon, I. Walsh, P. Brady, A. Lynch, T. Kelly, L. Doherty, C. McGurran, S. Campbell, A. Lyons, S. Dann, D. Sheahan, N. Morrissey, M. Jennings, W.J. McDermott, O. Plunkett.  Subs used: P. O'Connor.

Allen Cup Group 1 - 10/05/2008

Slashers 0-8 Fr. Manning Gaels 0-12

We were defeated by 4 points against Drumlish in the Allen cup on Saturday evening last.  This was a good game played in perfect conditions.  There was a good physical intensity which will stand to both teams later in the year.  Fr Manning Gaels had the better of exchanges in the first half with their experienced players like David Hanniffy, Pauric Davis and Gary Brady playing very well.  They lead 0-7 to 0-2 at half time and could have been further ahead.

The second half was much better from Slashers and we reduced the margin to one point with about 5 minutes to play.  Unfortunately Drumlish added three further points to run out comfortable winners.  Best for Slashers was Paddy McKeon in goals, Gareth Ghee and Mossie O’Rourke in defence and E.P.  Nolan in attack.

Team: P. McKeon, P. Brady, T. O’Rourke, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, D. Glennon, B. Farrell, d, Sheridan, B. Gilleran, N. Morrissey, C. Smith, N. Mulligan, E.P. Nolan, P. Dobson. D. Sheahan.  Subs used - R. Turner, S. Campbell.

All County Football League Division 4

Slashers 1-14 Killoe 0-13

Our intermediate team had a great win over Killoe in a closely contested game played in Michael Fay Park on Saturday evening.  Conditions were good. If a bit breezy, and there was plenty of good football and some great scoring on both teams.  Slashers lead by 1-5 to 0-5 at half time with the goal coming from a sweeping move the length of the field which was sweetly finished to the net by Cathal Creamer.

Slashers took a grip on the game early in the second half and took a commanding lead.  Instead of finishing off the game at this stage some sloppy play allowed Killoe back into the game and it was late scores from Chris McGurran and Colm Smith that sealed it in the end.

Eamon (EP) Nolan featured in goals and he made some great saves.  Also his lengthy kick outs gave us a advantage.  In defence Diarmaid McRory, Paddy McKeon and Peter Brady all played well.  Ian Shannon continued his good form in the middle of the park.  Up front Niall Morrissey and Martin Nevin were good in patches.  But for the second week running the match winner was Colm Smith who scored 0-8 from play and frees.

Team: E.P. Nolan, D. McRory, R. Turner, P. McKeon, T. Kelly, P. Brady, B, Farrell, I. Shannon (0-1), S. Campbell (0-1), N. Morrissey, C. Smith (0-8), M. Nevin, C. Creamer (1-0), P. Dobson (0-1), M. Jennings.   Subs used: C. McGurran (0-1) , J. Connolly

Leader Cup

Slashers 0-11 Dromard 0-9

After a less than convincing start to the year in the Bertie Allen Cup the senior team came out with all guns blazing and had a convincing if narrow victory over county champions Dromard.  The well attended game was played in perfect conditions in Michael Fay Park last Sunday at 2pm.

Early on the scoring was tit for tat but then we had a purple patch and were 0-7 t0 0-4 up at half time with excellent points from Stephen Philips, Colm Smith (3), Niall Mulligan, Mark Smith (2) and Martin Tarmey.  Mark Smith, who was making a great contribution, had to withdraw injured near the end of the half and hopefully the injury will not keep him out long.

Dromard made a good start to the second half to pull us back to 0-7 to 0-6 but exquisite pointed frees from Colm Smith (3) and one from play from the excellent Niall Mulligan put us into a commanding 0-11 to 0-6 lead with 5 minutes remaining.  Dromard finished strongly with three unanswered points but at no stage looked like they were going to win.

We won this game for two reasons. Firstly this was a great team performance with all players working extremely hard for the team.  Secondly there were some fantastic individual performances.  Our defence blotted out the dangerous Dromard attackers, with Gareth Ghee and Ian Shannon particularly prominent; our midfield was hard working and gave us at least parity in this area, out forwards looked dangerous throughout with excellent movement and score taking.

There was also many areas where we need to improve; our handling was very poor at times, our static passing in circles and indecision put us in trouble at times.  All these areas will need attention but at this time of the year it is all about performance and that was good.  Of course we cannot forget something as important, the win.

Congratulations to the team and management and hopefully this will give us a platform to build on.

Team: G. Hourican, P. Brady, T. O'Rourke, G. Ghee, D. Brady, I. Shannon, B. Farrell, D. Sheridan, B. Gilleran, N. Mulligan, M. Tarmey, C. Smith, M. Smith, S. Phillips, P. Dobson.  Subs used: E.P. Nolan, D. Sheahan, D. Glennon.

Allen Cup - 16-04/2008

Slashers 1-9 Ballymahon 1-9

We chalked up our first Allen Cup point in a tight match in played in Slashers last Wednesday night.

This was a great open game of football played at pace. We started like a team possessed and scored a goal in our first attack after a great move up the field.  We dominated the first 15 minutes and were 1-5 to 0-1 up at this point.  Ballymahon then a their period of dominance and kept us scoreless for the remainder of the half.  At half time we lead by 1-5 to 1-4.  Ballymahon continued on where they left off at half time and took a 1-8 to 1-5 lead.  Gradually we hauled ourselves back into the game and scored four unanswered points. Ballymahon secured a draw with a point in the last minute.  Overall this was a fair result as despite the periods of dominance it could have gone either way in the end.

This was a great improvement on our last outing and if we continue to make this progress we should be hitting form in time for the Leader Cup and championship. Beast for Slashers were Ian Shannon, Adrian Murphy, Martin Tarmey and Steven Philips.

Team: P. McKeon, A. Lynch,  O'Rourke, G. Ghee, S. Meenaghan, I. Shannon, B. Farrell, D. Sheridan, S. Campbell, A. Murphy, M. Tarmey, D. Sheehan, C. Smith, S. Phillips, P. Dobson.  Subs used: E.P. Nolan, D. Mannion.

Bertie Allen Cup - 28/03/2008

Slashers 0 -15 Granard 2 – 11

We suffered our third defeat in the Bertie Allen Cup on Saturday when Granard were fortunate to take both points in a closely fought game.  This game was fixed for Granard but was transferred to Slashers because the pitch in Granard was unplayable.  This is a game we could and should have won.  Our defence was good throughout and was it not for a couple of lapses of concentration (when we conceded soft goals) we most likely would have won.  Our midfield shared the possession evenly with their direct opponents which ensured we had a plentiful supply of ball to our forwards.  Scoring 15 points will win most games and overall the forward unit were dangerous throughout.  Injuries to Niall Mulligan and Eamon Nolan disrupted our flow in the latter stages of the game but it was a goal in the last minute that won it for Granard.

The performance was a significant improvement on the previous two games.  Results are important but seeing the team performance improving is more important at this time of the year.  We have one more Allen Cup game and then it is into the senior league.  We need all our players hitting form at that time and then maintaining consistency for the rest of the season.

Team: R. Duffy, G. Ghee, P. Brady, P. McKeon, D. Mannion, B. Gilleran, B. Farrell, D. Sheridan, S. Campbell, D. McRory, N. Mulligan, A. Murphy, D. Sheehan, P. Dobson, E. Nolan  Subs used – A. Lynch, K. Sheridan , W.J.McDermott and N. Morrissey.

All County Football League Division 4

Longford Slashers 0-6 Fr.Manning Gaels 2-7

Our intermediate team lost to a strong Drumlish team last Saturday.  We started the game brightly and put the Drumlish defence under extreme pressure early in the game.  Unfortunately we did not get the scores on the board and the Gaels finished the half strongest to lead by 0-5 to 0-2.

Second half substitute closed the game to two but the Gaels pointed and then scored a fortunate goal when our defence was wrong footed by a ball rebounding off the post.  The ball was finished to the net by the alert Gaels attacker. Soon after the Gaels scored their second goal and that made the gap 8 points.  We tried hard to close the gap but we struggled to impose ourselves around the field.

Our second half substitutes did give us more attacking options but in the end the Gaels used their experience to run out convincing winners.

Best for Slashers were Gordon Hourican in goals, Paddy McKeon, T, Kelly, Peter Brady in defence and Philip Dobson, David Sheahan and Adrian Murphy in attack.

Team: G. Hourican, D. McRory, R. Turner, P. McKeon, T. Kelly, P. Brady, S. Meeneghan, A. Lyons, L. Doherty, D. Sheahan, W/J. McDermott, D. Sheridan, O. Plunkett, P. Dobson, S. Dann.  Subs used - M. Tarmey, A. Murphy, C. Creamer, A. Lynch, I. Walsh.

Bertie Allen Cup - 17/03/2008

Longford Slashers 1-10 Clonguish 2-10

We suffered another defeat in the Bertie Allen Cup.  This was a game we could have won but so far this year we just have not produced winning football.  Hopefully we will learn from our losses in these games and it will stand to us as the year progresses. Best for Slashers on the day were Peter Brady, Barry Gilleran and Cathal Creamer.

Team: G. Hourican, A. Lynch, M. O’Rourke, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, P. Brady, B. Farrell, B. Gilleran, S. Campbell, M. Tarmey, N. Mulligan, A. Murphy, E. Nolan, C. Smith, P. Dobson  Subs used – R. Duffy, P. McKeon, W.J.McDermott, C. Creamer

All County Football League Division 4 - 07/03/2008

Longford Slashers 1-6 Colmcille 1-8

Our intermediate team were narrowly beaten by two points by a very strong Colmcille team.  The strong wind, blowing straight down the field, was always going to have a major influence on the outcome and that is the way it worked out.  Colmcille played with the wind and dominated the first half.  We struggled badly to contain them and never looked very threatening ourselves.  We went in 1-6 to 0-2 down at half time.  The second half was almost the reverse of the first but we just could not get the vital scores to secure victory.  We also suffered a blow when Ian Shannon was red carded.

The first half was poor but we played some fine football during the second half with Adrian Murphy and Martin Tarmey beginning to get to the pace of the Gaelic ball after some time away from the game.  Other to impress were Roger Turner, Tomas Kelly and Ian Shannon.

Team: P. McKeon, I. Walsh, R. Turner, D. McRory, T. Kelly, L. Doherty, A. Lynch, I. Shannon, A. Lyons, P. Dobson, M. Tarmey, A. Murphy, D. Sheahan, D. Sheahan, E. Nolan, S. Dann.  Subs used P. Brady, K. Sheridan, D. Sheridan, and C. Warnock.

Junior League

Longford Slashers 5-7 Clonguish 2-7

Our Juniors started the year with a great victory against a strong Clonguish team.  The game was close in general player but our ability to score goals separated the team sin the end.  The defence in general played very well with Tomas Kelly and Sean Meenaghan outstanding.  Our midfield was under pressure early in the game but our selectors crowded this area, with Willie John McDermott coming in from centre forward, to negate the Clonguish advantage.  After this we actually won a much higher percentage of the breaks and this ensured a continuous supply to our forwards.  Three of the forwards, Shane Dann, David Sheridan and Martin Jennings scored goals and Shane Campbell, from midfield also netted.

This was a great team performance overall and considering we were missing several players it bodes well for the season ahead.

Team: G.Hourican, I.Walsh, R.Turner, P.Devine, T.Kelly, S.meenaghan, P.Brady, D.Sheehan, S.Campbell, S.Dann, W.J.McDermott, D.Sheridan, M.Jennings, D.Dobson, A.Lyons.

Bertie Allen Cup

Longford Slashers 0-10 Ardagh 1-9

Our seniors lost out to a determined Ardagh team last Friday night in the first round of the Bertie Allen Cup.  The wet and windy conditions dictated that it was never going to be a classic.  Both teams made a catalogue of errors and the difference was that Ardagh took more advantage when they had the wind in their backs.  Both teams were short a number of players but it gave the Slashers team management an opportunity to give several fringe players a game.

Overall this was a very poor display.  Several players continually took wrong options, others handling was abysmal,   others positional play was extremely naive and worse of all was the constant ‘mouthing’ at the referee by both teams. It is the responsibility of team managements to stop this behaviour.

On the positive side the atrocious conditions was always going to make it difficult for players in their first game of the year.  We have a lot of room for improvement to make but it is early in the year.

 Team: G. Hourican, A. Lynch, P. Brady, G. Ghee, D. Mannion, B. Gilleran, B. Farrell, I. Shannon, S. Campbell, N. Mulligan, D. Sheahan, A. Murphy, C. Smith, E. Nolan, S. Meeneghan.  Subs used – R. Duffy, D. McRory, P. Dobson, M. Tarmey, C. Creamer.
